Bond does it again
by David Crowe
Bond has saved the world once again. His
colleagues in Whitehall receive the news with mixed feelings. Senior
civil servant Sir Kenneth Wiseman is less enthusiastic than his
assistant, JD – while cleaning lady, Mrs Watkins, turns out
to have a completely mistaken idea about the environment in which
she works. But, as always in the world of espionage, things are
rarely so simple as they seem …
My first foray into play-writing, this is perhaps more of an extended
sketch than a short play. A bit of light-hearted escapism, which
I hope will provide some amusement.
There are only three speaking parts; so, in a change from our usual
“round the room” distribution of roles, I have preselected
the readers, who have already rehearsed the script together. Thanks
in advance to Julia, Richard, Martin and Hannamari.
Complete script
I can explain
by Bruce Kane
Our prepared reading of Bruce Kane’s
Cracking
the whip last year proved very entertaining, and prompted
me to suggest another play from the same collection.
From the cover blurb: I can explain presents two couples
who dance their way into and out of love without ever accepting
any of the responsibilities for their actions.
I chose this play from the four in the book because in reading
it myself, I found it hardest to visualise. Although the blurb mentions
two couples, there are in fact several more characters, and I hope
that their individualities and the relationships between them may
be easier to disentangle in a live reading, with a different speaker
taking each role.
The presentation is both a challenge and a stimulus to a director.
The action takes place everywhere or nowhere, offering a fine potential
for creative staging. As with Bruce’s other plays, the dialogue
is a great strength, being snappy, contemporary and believable.
You can read the opening pages on Bruce’s own Web
site.
